Temple Israel 80th Anniversary – Commemorative Magazine

cropped-Inside-Shul

The seeds of Progressive Reform Judaism were first sown in South Africa in 1930. In June 1931, the South African Jewish Religious Union for Liberal Judaism was established and, two years later, Rabbi Moses Cyrus Weiler was brought to Johannesburg by the committee. He became the first Progressive Reform Rabbi in South Africa.

Temple Israel was built in 1936 and became the first home for Progressive Jews. Today, 80 years later, the Mother Synagogue of Progressive Judaism in South Africa still stands proud as a place of Jewish culture and religion in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

We are producing a magazine to celebrate Temple Israel’s 80th anniversary. The commemorative magazine will include a comprehensive history of Temple Israel, the Progressive movement, the Reform shuls throughout South Africa, the national and local sisterhoods, Netzer and more.

It will be distributed to guests at the 80th anniversary event on Saturday 9 July 2016 and to VIPs in South Africa and abroad.

Darryl Egnal from Bet David will be editing and producing the publication. If you would like to support the magazine in any way, through memories of Temple Israel, messages of congratulations, or advertising your company/organisation, please email Darryl for information, deadlines and specifications  – darryl@creativeheart.co.za – or collect the printed forms left in the foyer of the shul.

Please note: The deadlines are tight as we only have about six weeks to put this magazine together. Therefore, please send your contributions to Darryl as soon as possible.
