Bet David

About Us

Bet David is a warm, welcoming progressive Jewish congregation dedicated to Jewish practice and learning. Our goal is to help every person who walks through our doors cultivate a meaningful and relevant relationship with Judaism, enriching their lives spiritually and communally.

We were founded in 1971, right here in Morningside. A larger synagogue was built and consecrated in 1977, to accommodate the growing congregation. The shul you see now is the third, which opened its doors for the first time on the evening of Rosh HaShanah 5778 (September 2017), and features two stained glass windows and Temple menorah lights from the previous sanctuary.

At its opening sermon, Rabbi Adrian Schell said “From the time we entered into a covenant with God, there was always the vision of a sanctuary, a Mishkan, in which our relationship with God and our fellow humans can grow. The Greek word, synagogue, meaning, gathering or assembly, reflects that which we have built. Our synagogue echoes that covenant—to create a gathering place for Jews, the community, and God.

Our shul has since undergone more renovations, including a new mikvah. From our warm, light sanctuary to our gardens, we aim to create a space where you can come as you are and find acceptance, friendship, knowledge, and God.

Everyone is welcome at our shul. We would love to have you join us!”

A Quick Intro to Progressive Judaism

Throughout history, Jews have remained firmly rooted in Jewish tradition. But with modern life came a need to introduce innovation while preserving tradition, to embrace diversity within our common beliefs, and to welcome people of all backgrounds to this vibrant community.

Progressive Judaism (also called Reform Judaism) believes that Judaism frozen in time is an heirloom, not a living fountain. We understand that tradition is an integral part of our faith, but we also believe in living out our faith in practical ways in the modern world.
